Moments with Mark

Greetings in the Name of our Savior!

We are starting another all-church Bible Study beginning on September 10th. It is called Max on Life by Max Lucado. Following is a brief description:

We have questions. Real, important and challenging questions. Questions about family, finances, and forgiveness. Unsettling questions regarding illness, death and eternity. Don't we crave answers to these questions that tug on the deepest parts of our hearts?

Max Lucado has received thousands of questions and wrestled with plenty of his own. In these eight Bible study sessions, one of today's most trusted pastors takes on life's most important questions. Here's hoping that his answers to the questions of others will help you find answers to your own.

You can sign up on-line or in the Narthex. You may participate in a Sunday School class , small group, or on your own. The participant’s guide and videos are on Right Now Media. If you do not have access, contact Leah in the church office to get access. I hope for great participation. It is an opportunity for each of to grow in our spiritual journey.

On another note: Kimmy’s sister, Jessi, is stepping down as co-director of Children’s Ministry. She and Brandon are expecting their 3rd child this Fall. Kimmy will be the sole Director beginning in September. WE NEED YOU!! To help with this important ministry. Please see Kimmy to discover ways in which you can serve.

And finally: LET’S CELEBRATE JUBILEE!! (September 30th & October 1st).

Blessings and peace,
Pastor Mark

PRAYER ADVOCATES

We would like to have someone in the prayer room before each service to pray with Pastor Mark and/or any other service leader that would like to pray.  It would be nice to have someone there for each service praying for the service also.  Prayer times are 8:00, 9:15 & 10:15.  Please let me know if you are available.  Respond to Barbara Woods (317) 861-5619, or email at barb5619@gmail.com

SUNDAY GREETERS

The Greeter volunteer is a very enjoyable opportunity!  For 15 minutes before each service, you get to be in the Welcome Center to greet people who are coming in.  Guests may need directions and will feel welcome when there is someone available to greet them or just extend a smile and “hello”.

You can sign up for one or more times a month.  We would like to have 2 people for each time so someone could be at the Welcome Center door to assist people when entering the building.

There are several available opportunities.  The times are 8:00, 9:15 and 10:15.  Please call or email Barbara Woods to accept this opportunity to serve at (317) 861-5619 or barb5619@gmail.com

Our New Palestine United Methodist Women’s largest fundraiser for missions is happening this month.  It is called “94 Days Until Christmas.”  We want you to know more about this event so you can get it on your calendar.   The date is Saturday, September 23rd, from 9:00 – 3:00.
There is a list of the vendors we have coming this year at the end of this article.  As you will see there are a variety of things to look at, not just Christmas crafts.  We have food for people and decorations for your house and holiday things.  There is jewelry, crafts and much more.  Check out the list below.
However, these vendors are only part of what is available to you on this day.  All day we will be baking and selling Treva’s wonderful cinnamon rolls, fresh and hot for $2.  The sale of these will start at 9:00, the same time the vendors open their booths.  We will also have coffee available.  Lunch will also be sold.  All lunch items will be $1.  We will have chili and bean soup, salads, desserts and a variety of drinks. If you don’t think you want to come to the vendor fair, then come with you friends for breakfast and/or lunch at Katherine’s Kitchen.  All lunch proceeds will be donated to the CMC Building Fund, as the UMW’s donation to the Time Is Now! Campaign.
Our own UMW will have a booth.  We will be selling crafts, jams and jellies, baked goods and many more things.  Any one of you can donate to our booth.  Just bring your donation to the Kitchen C by Friday, September 22nd.  Thanks for helping us to support our missions program.
There is a flyer in the newsletter and more can be obtained from the church office or from any of the Craft Circle ladies.  Please invite all your friends and family.  We have had a great group of vendors in the last 3 years and we expect this year to be great too!  We could use more foot traffic for our vendors.
If you have questions, please call us.  If you know someone that would like to participate as a vendor, please have them get together with us quickly.  Hope to see you there!  It is going to be a great day!

2017 HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GREENFIELD HOUSE BUILD

NPUMC MISSIONS will again be a sponsor of the Habitat house build in Greenfield.  The first day of the build is Thursday, September 7th  and I have scheduled us to do the wall raising on the first day of the build.  (How Exciting!)  We need 15 able bodied workers for the day starting at 7:30; our shift will end at   2:30.  For those that do not want to swing a hammer, there will be an opportunity to serve in another way.  We will be providing lunch for all workers and probably coffee and donuts in the morning.
Hopefully, this advance notice will let you take a day off from work so you can participate with our church team.   I will have a sign- up sheet in the narthex very soon.  (You will also have to register online to be able to participate.)  You can work on other days but, you will need to sign up on line for each time you want to work.   Any questions please call Denny Woods, Habitat build coordinator. Missions Update:

We will continue with the explanation of the missions that you help support.

The third category is International Commitments.
The mission of Africa University is to provide quality education within a Pan-African context through which persons can acquire general and professional knowledge and skills, grow in spiritual maturity, develop sound moral values, ethics and leadership qualities. The development of Africa University is a consequence of the growth of United Methodism in Africa. The growth in membership and the emerging socio-economic and political needs in their countries led the African Bishops of the United Methodist Church (UMC) to call on their Church to invest in higher education provision in Africa.

  • Joy in the Harvest is a Christian mission working in Tanzania. Founded in 1992, we have seen God at work in incredible ways.   Joy in the Harvest is committed to serving God by serving Africans. God’s love compels us to address the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs of our neighbors. We do this through our numerous projects and ministries. It’s a joy to watch God impact thousands of lives in so many ways. Some of their projects include: Apprenticeship & Vocational Training, Compassion Ministries, Evangelism & Church Planting and Technical Ministries.  We communicate there with Lowell and Claudia Wertz.

 JOHN ENRIGHT FLIGHT MINISTRIES
John and Kendra Enright established the Kafakumba Training Center in 1998. In addition to a conference center where they hold a pastors’ school for three months each year, they have started a wood shop, several agricultural projects, and other economic development ventures to help improve the lives of the local people.  Their activities have included evangelism, church construction, pilot for the Wings of the Morning Flight Ministry, teaching at the Kafakumba Pastors' School, and economic development.

OPERATION CLASSROOM
The Mission of Operation Classroom is to partner with the United Methodist Churches of Liberia and Sierra Leone to improve secondary education—particularly vocational education.
OC is working with our West African partners to develop “Career Academies” to equip youth of West Africa with marketable skills and tools and abilities to be entrepreneurs.   The curriculum will include marketing, management, accounting, ethics, leadership, economics, sociology, and emerging technologies.  Competitive grant programs have been established to develop these academies.

UMCOR
United Methodist Committee on Relief
For more than 50 years, United Methodist congregations have been taking part in a special UMCOR Sunday offering, laying the foundation for UMCOR’s ministry of relief and hope.

Donations UMCOR receives through this offering, along with other undesignated gifts made throughout the year, cover our costs of doing business. Gifts like yours make it possible for UMCOR to use 100% of all other contributions on the projects our donors specify, instead of on administrative or fundraising costs. UMCOR does not receive United Methodist World Service or apportionment funds, so without your offerings, UMCOR would not exist.

The fourth category is National Commitments.

Red Bird Mission, Inc. and Red Bird Clinic, Inc. have been providing ministries in southeastern Kentucky since 1921. Today the need remains critical in this isolated, rural distressed area. Chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain provide obstacles to a fuller life for the residents of this area. Red Bird Mission and Clinic strives to meet these needs through ministry in five areas: Education, Health and Wellness, Community Outreach, Economic Opportunity, and

Henderson Settlement is located in Frakes and White Oak communities in southern Kentucky.  A community center offers outreach services, tutoring, and adult education.  A work camp program helps improve homes in the area.  A senior citizens center provides transportation, access to health services, and a social outlet.  Youth ministries offers activities year-round.  A day care center offers a service to working families.

McCurdy Ministries is thriving and striving to make an important difference in the Espanola Valley in New Mexico.  It works in partnership with McCurdy Charter School.  The ministries include McCurdy Preschool, mental health counseling, after school care, and summer camp.

On a Mission Active in Divine Service – NOMADS provide volunteer labor for United Methodist organizations through an RV ministry. NOMADS demonstrate God’s love through our work and by listening to the people with whom we work. We do new construction, remodeling, and repairs for churches, children’s homes, camps, colleges, outreach missions and disaster rebuilding. Team members do maintenance, cleaning, painting, electrical, drywall, sewing, flooring. With God’s help, NOMADS pretty much do it all.
